Solar lighting technology has come a long way over the last decade and there’s a lot of conflicting information out there. Some of this info is merely outdated, but some is also misinformation. In this blog, we’re setting the record straight on some of the most prevalent solar lighting myths.
Myth: Solar is more expensive than wired lighting
Although solar lighting fixtures can be more expensive than their traditional wired counterparts, the money is saved on installation and maintenance. Solar lighting is entirely self-contained and requires no trenching, digging, or wiring, which can save hundreds of thousands of dollars on your project.
Installation of FLT solar lights is simple. Only the poles are fixed into the ground, followed by the light fixture being connected to the pole. On average, installation takes less than 10 minutes per light. As for maintenance, lights with lithium-ion batteries can operate continuously for up to 10 years and are immune to any surges, outages, and issues that can result from being connected to the power grid.
Myth: Solar only works on sunny days
This may be the case with some solar lights, but not FLT lights. We use a smart controller in each of our products that utilizes predictive adaptation. This allows the light to calculate shading and weather to keep the light operating regardless of direct sunlight. The controller enables the light to save battery power in order to still run during cloudy weather.
Myth: Solar lighting doesn’t work in the winter
Solar lighting that uses lithium-ion batteries (like our products) can handle super cold temperatures. In addition to handling cloudy days, our smart controller also makes sure our lights remain on during snow coverage. With the advancement of technology, solar technology can now easily run during winter months.
Myth: Solar lighting doesn’t have significant environmental benefits
We know that solar is a sustainable and green energy option, but most of the time this information does not include any statistics. Solar technology produces no emissions or pollution to work. In fact, with the growing renewable industry, energies like solar are helping to make pollutants net-neutral. Global carbon dioxide emissions grew only 0.2% in the first six months of 2023.
